Here at Body Beautiful You we have been eco conscious from the very beginning. Our products are vegan, cruelty free, eco friendly and our packaging is 100% recyclable. So when we wanted to introduce a plus size clothing range we knew it had to be sustainable fashion and eco friendly. Our world as a whole needs to reduce its reliance on fast fashion but this is easier said than done. First there is the higher cost of sustainable fashion but also changing our mindset, as we have become so reliant on cheap and easy to come by clothing. so much so that we are updating our wardrobes every season and for some people, buying cheap clothing that is disposed of after a single holiday. Change will not be easy but it is definitely needed.
As a plus size Woman i know the challenges that come with finding larger clothing sizes. I've forever had the feeling of 'why can't I just walk into a high-street store and find clothes in my size?' This is a common thought amongst people in larger bodies and our first thought is to diet and change ourselves. Well let me tell you, we are not the problem! Yes you read that right, there is a deeply ingrown stigma in our society around people in larger bodies and unfortunately this is extremely evident in the fashion industry. Change is hopefully coming but it may take time.
Sourcing plus size clothing on its own was a challenge at first, then the biggest challenge was finding plus size fashion that was of good quality and sustainable. It was extremely important to us that our clothes were made in the UK by a company we could be sure were paying their employees a fair wage and also to reduce our carbon footprint with regards to shipping. The other important factor was that our clothes would be made using sustainable products or recycled fabric and that they would not be cheap fast fashion.
Sustainable fashion tends to be more expensive than fast fashion, but this isn't because it is some new fad or trend that people are trying to jump on to make more money. The greater expense is due to the longevity of products, the quality and the fact they were made ethically.
